about

Musically, this is one of the darkest on the album, and it has an unusual mood to it that I'm not quite sure how I accomplished, and could probably not recreate. Especially the distorted lead guitar line that comes in on the human race line.

I was taking a creative writing class in college when I wrote this one, and I turned in the lyrics as a poem. Even though I live in a city now, and usually act like a human being, I still long to run wild in the woods.

lyrics

sometimes i dream away the things
that make me human and not beast
it’s only then that things make sense
and i can truly feel at peace

i wish i was a creature
under starry skies
living by my lonesome
free from human ties

sometimes i press my ear against
the earth and hear it call my name
just want to run away to wilderness
away from what’s been tamed

i dream i am a creature
in the flesh and bone
i follow ancient instinct
i prowl the woods alone

i dream i am a creature
out baying at the moon
beneath a sky of silver
i howl my nightly tune

i wish i was a creature
want to learn to be a creature
want to go back to nature
let the earth be my teacher

sometimes i feel like a creature
oh god wish i was a creature
devote myself to nature
let the earth be my preacher

the human race is headed fast
for places i don’t want to go
we’ve gone too far and grown in ways
we really never should have grown

i close my eyes and slip inside
a creature’s elegant mind

sometimes i dream away the things
that make me human and not beast
it’s only then that things make sense
and i can truly feel at peace

i dreamt i was a creature
down upon my knees
drinking from a river
underneath the trees

sometimes i’m like a creature
as here beneath the moon
where lit by beams of silver
i howl my nightly tune

sometimes i’m like a creature
as here beneath the moon
where lit by beams of silver
i howl my nightly tune
